Irrigation, food security and poverty – Lessons from three large dams in West Africa (EN)

  Report

The Global Water Initiative (GWI), in partnership with the irrigation development and management authorities (sociétés d’aménagement et de gestion de l’irrigation, SAGI), began a series of retrospective studies in 2013 at 3 sites: Sélingué in Mali, Anambé (Niandouba and Confluent dams) in Senegal, and Bagré in Burkina Faso . The aim of these studies was to analyse the conditions for financial and economic viability of such water management projects, and the possibilities for improving the living conditions of farming families following the construction of dams. These studies should enable existing projects to be better managed and cultivated, and future projects to be better designed.
