Transboundary River Basins

Sio – Malaba – Malakisi River Basin (Kenya-Uganda)

In the Horn of Africa, BRIDGE is implementing activities in the Sio – Malaba – Malakisi (SMM) River Basin between Kenya and Uganda. It has also been supporting the East African Community developing a Water Resources Policy and IWRM Strategy.

Achievements

Sio-Malaba-Malakisi (SMM)

BRIDGE piloted its benefit sharing methodology in the basin, working with key stakeholders to select and prioritise a number of key transboundary infrastructures. BRIDGE also facilitated the development of an Investment Plan and Financial Sustainability Strategy, which have framed the resource mobilisation and implementation of at least one of the projects.

BRIDGE has been active in the SMM since 2016.

East African Community (EAC)

BRIDGE has supported the development of an EAC Regional Water Resources Policy and IWRM Strategy, with the objective to contribute to poverty reduction and sustainable development by guiding the EAC Member States on water resources management, reconciling economic development, social equity and economic protection.

BRIDGE has been working with the EAC since 2019.
