IUCN Water and Wetlands

Working towards sustainable water management

The mission of the IUCN Water and Wetlands Team is to be a trusted partner for evidence-based and adaptive change in water resource management that benefits nature and people.

We bring together our extensive network of IUCN Members, experts, government and private sector partners to develop sustainable solutions to preserve our water resources. Our knowledge is based around the central theme of Implementing Sustainable River Basin Management, branching off into key components which consist of:

Implementing IWRM (Integrated Water Resources Management) using an ecosystems approach.
Good governance of water resources and dialogue to build transboundary cooperation and effective water resource management at all levels

History

Responding to the need to protect and conserve our water resources, IUCN formed its Water and Wetlands team in 1985. Since its inception, the Team has been working across the world, mainly focusing on the Middle East, Africa, Central and South America, and Asia.

Our initiatives and projects cover multiple areas such as integrated water resource management, environmental flows, water economics, watershed ecosystems, as well as river bank rehabilitation, and the effects of climate change on global water supply and distribution.

The Water and Wetlands Team contributes towards the conservation of water biodiversity by promoting, influencing and catalysing sustainable uses and equitable sharing of resources, as well as protecting ecosystems.
