Transboundary river basins

Honduras, El Salvador, Costa Rica, Panama

Until 2021 BRIDGE was active in Mesoamerica, developing water governance capacities through capacity building, exchanges of experiences and dissemination of lessons learnt as well as enhancing the Water Champions network. BRIDGE activities were implemented in three pilot sites: Sumpul (Honduras – El Salvador), the Goascorán (Honduras – El Salvador), and the Sixaola (Costa Rica – Panama) river basins.

Challenges and achievements

Goascoran River Basin

BRIDGE supported the establishment of the Binational Management Committee of the Goascoran River facilitated the strengthening of its role, through updating of the basin management plan and improving its effectiveness for sustainable development and appropriate transboundary management of the transboundary river.

Sixaola River Basin

BRIDGE supported the establishment of the Sixola Binational Commission, facilitating its operationalisation through the reinforcement of the institutional structure with the aim to make the Commission able to sustain, plan and carry out its activities.

Sumpul River Basin

BRIDGE re-activated the Sumpul Transboundary Commission and prepared an Action Plan for its operationalisation

BRIDGE was active in the Sumpul River Basin from 2016 – 2019

Coàtan River Basin

Created a Water Champions network, exchanging experience between micro-watersheds and built capacity on issues of internal water law, water governance and management.
