Bringing Source-to-Sea to Life: inclusive approaches connecting people and ecosystems

Bringing Source-to-Sea to Life: inclusive approaches connecting people and ecosystems

  s2s     Video

Source-to-sea management provides a unifying framework to connect ecosystems, sectors and stakeholders from land to ocean, while enabling more inclusive and participatory decision-making. By bridging fragmented governance spaces, it creates opportunities for diverse actors—including local communities, basin-level stakeholders and underrepresented groups—to actively shape and implement solutions.

In transboundary contexts, this approach strengthens cooperation by fostering shared dialogue, mutual understanding and coordinated action across borders, sectors and governance levels. A growing set of complementary tools and initiatives supports its application, including the Guidance Note for the Implementation of Source-to-Sea Management in Transboundary Basins, the “How to Apply the Source-to-Sea Approach in GEF International Waters Projects” framework, and the Source to Sea Action Platform—which brings together diverse organizations and partners to connect efforts, share knowledge and collaborate across the full source-to-sea continuum.

This session highlighted how source-to-sea approaches can:

  • Create inclusive spaces for dialogue and collaboration across sectors, levels and countries;
  • Elevate local voices and knowledge in shaping and implementing solutions;
  • Improve coordination and coherence between local, national and regional processes;
  • Foster partnerships and mobilize action that reflect diverse needs and shared benefits.
