Pangani Basin: A Situation Analysis
The Pangani River Basin (PRB), spanning over 43,650 km2 mostly in Tanzania with a small portion in Kenya, is crucial for its diverse resources. With 3.7 million Tanzanian inhabitants, water and arable land are vital, particularly in the highlands which receive more rainfall but face competition for land, leading to increased irrigation and migration to lowland areas. Land use competition extends to forestry, with some areas protected but others facing challenges due to limited resources for enforcement. Additionally, the Basin boasts mineral deposits, fisheries, wetlands, and tourist attractions, with interests from industrial and farming sectors, including large-scale irrigation schemes that consume significant water resources annually.
