Transboundary River Basins

Mozambique, Zimbabwe, Tanzania, Malawi

In Southern Africa BRIDGE is working in two transboundary basins: the Buzi, Pungwe, Save River Basins (Mozambique – Zimbabwe) and the Ruvuma River Basin (Mozambique, Tanzania, Malawi).

Achievements

Buzi, Pungwe, Save River Basins

BRIDGE supported the development of three transboundary river agreements, one for each of the river basins (latest, Save Agreement was signed in 2023). BRIDGE was also instrumental bringing funds from the Global Environment Facility (GEF) to BuPuSa to complement BRIDGE activities and mobilise funds which has resulted in the establishment of the BuPuSa Watercourse Commission, launched in July 2023.

BRIDGE has been active in the BuPuSa since 2014.

Ruvuma River Basin

Given BRIDGE achievements in BuPuSa, requests were received from Mozambique, Tanzania and Malawi for a similar process in the Ruvuma River Basin – three basin meetings have been held and the programme will support the development of a MoU between the countries, which will lead to the establishment of a River Basin Organisation for the Ruvuma.

BRIDGE has been active in the Ruvuma River Basin since 2021.
