Transboundary River and Lake Basins

Benin, Cameroon, Central African Republic, Chad, Liberia, Nigeria, Niger, Sierra Leone

In Western and Central Africa, BRIDGE is working in three transboundary basins: the Mano River (Liberia – Sierra Leone), the Mono River (Benin – Togo) and the Chari-Logone (Cameroon – Chad) sub-basin of Lake Chad (Nigeria, Niger, Chad, Cameroon, Central African Republic).

Achievements

Mano River

BRIDGE has been building capacities of the Mano River Union, member states and local communities in IWRM and International Water Law, providing co-finance and complementing activities of the basins Global Environment Facility (GEF) project, and working to set up local and national water platforms to create formal and informal spaces for dialogue and negotiation over water uses.

BRIDGE has been active in the basin since 2014.

Mono River

The Mono River Basin became an official BRIDGE basin in 2022, but between 2019 – 2021, BRIDGE provided co-finance to activities in the basin, supporting the Mono Basin Authority and developing a GEF PIF which is currently being prepared for implementation.

Lake Chad

BRIDGE has been working closely with the Lake Chad Basin Commission (LCBC) since 2014 creating awareness among local communities in the Logone sub-basin about the Lake Chad Water Charter (entered into force in 2017). Through setting up both national and local platforms, BRIDGE has institutionalised the implementation of the Water Charter, particularly through the co-development of operational plans and facilitation of discussions, which also contributed to the cessation of tensions linked to the navigation of the river.

BRIDGE has been active in the basin since 2014.
